Southbridge is proud to announce that Laurie Wheeler (RN) from Chelsey Park Long-Term Care has won the Ontario Long-Term Care Association (OLTCA) Nursing Leadership Award at the 4th annual Awards Gala on November 15, 2018.
Each year, the OLTCA recognizes two Registered Nurses or Registered Practical Nurses who have demonstrated measurable achievements in improving the quality, culture and value of resident care, and who have consistently demonstrated excellence through critical thinking and problem solving, modeling behaviours, leading change and innovation, and linking knowledge to practice.
Laurie won the award for her part in the development of the Long-Term Care Community of Practice for Pain and Palliative Care in London, Ontario. The Community of Practice focuses on end-of-life practices and pain and symptom-management standards. Through consultations, it has expanded to include spiritual care, which was identified as an area in which many homes struggled.
The Community of Practice started in 2013 with seven long-term care facilities. It presently has 18 facilities involved and has grown to include pharmacy providers, universities, spiritual and palliative care committees.
Laurie’s accomplishments will be highlighted on the OLTCA website and in the next issue of the association’s magazine, Long Term Care Today.
This is the third time a Southbridge Care Homes’ employee has been recognized for an award from the OLTCA and reflects the great work that is accomplished every day in the care of our residents.
Chelsey Park is home to 247 long-term care residents in London, Ontario.
Laurie, on behalf of all of us at Southbridge, we are so proud that you are a part of our team and thank you for your shining example to all of us!
